It’s resolution time! Before setting out to completely rework your life (and personality), ask yourself these important questions: Who needs them? Who wants them? Let’s face it, those beginning of the year promises only make us more frustrated and more unhappy. So why not make this the year of un-resolutions? Try something new and forget adding more expectations to your days and opt instead for reducing your stress. But how? Here are a few tips to help you make 2024 the best year yet:

  • Just say NO:  it’s amazing what those two little letters can do to make our lives simpler and more enjoyable. Make 2024 the year of the “NO.” Say no to attending parties you don’t want to; making cookies for your kids school bake sale (buy them instead); adding yet another sport to your kids’ activity roster (send them outside to play instead); and even to your bosses request to stay just a little longer.”  Choose the activities and events that you can handle; have time for; and will add to your life experiences. Then let the rest go.
     
  • Schedule some fun: life can get busy and that busyness can suck the fun right out of our days. Be sure to schedule in some fun with your friends, kids, and spouse. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate – maybe just an afternoon playing in the sprinkler on a hot day or toasting marshmallows in the back yard after dinner.
     

  • Ask for help: stress builds up when we take on more than we can handle. Unfortunately, sometimes we can’t control our schedule. That doesn’t mean we can’t – or shouldn’t – ask for others to lend a hand. That may mean calling a friend, family member or even neighbor when needs arise.
     
  • Call a friend: it’s a proven fact that interacting with others helps reduce your stress levels. Don’t overlook the benefits of a cup of coffee and a good belly laugh with those who know you best.
     
  • Give (and accept) a hug: research shows that a 20-second hug reduces the harmful effects of stress, relieves blood pressure, and ensures a healthy heart. Increasing your hug ration won’t just make you feel better – it’ll make you better.

Life is naturally hectic, so why add to your stress by planning too much or expecting too much (from yourself) and doing too much. Give yourself a break and make 2024 the year of the un-resolution.
